People responded readily, supporting her, hugging her, and giving their bits: You could pray. You could meditate. You could make sure you are taking your vitamins. You could realize that sometimes life is tough. Remember we love you. All very wonderful, thoughtful, loving answers that definitely had some power to ease my daughter's situation.
One of my nephews (her cousin) is a straight-talking, no-emotional-foo-foo cowboy. This was his answer for her (and you have to imagine the Western twang of his accent, also): "Imagine a TRex trying to scratch its rear end."
I saw that little gem in the middle of all the other more serious encouragements, and it hit me like a bolt of lightening. I could NOT stop laughing all morning as I--yea--imagined a TRex trying to scratch its rear end!
It also helped me to realize that sometimes we make it too hard. Do this step. Then that. Put this in order, then that. Follow this advice, and this one. Get it all right. THEN it will be okay.
Real life watches us doing all that and says--WHATEVER. Ha ha ha. And then it does what it wants to do anyway.
If you are dealing with heavy life issues, and are on the journey of healing, it's important to get a little humor bone in your body. Relax a bit. There's no race. You can just BE. Crap happens. Sometimes you feel crappy. Sometimes the car doesn't start. Sometimes the muffins burn. Sometimes your whole life changes and everything you thought was important to you gets taken away.
Yea, serious stuff.
I don't mean you have to laugh out loud all the time with jokes. (Although, be my guest. Have you seen the movie, Rat Race*?)
But realize, if you can, that a) you can't control everything and it's nobody's fault; b) you are human and everyone else is too; c) good changes to bad, and bad changes to good--everything passes with time; d) it's all good, because it's all a teacher; e) it's all good, because it's all an opportunity to love; and f) yea, go ahead and laugh when things feel broken, laugh while you're crying, and say, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe I signed up for this planet! WTF?" and then--breathe. Even if it's not a laughing matter, per se--you're allowed to breathe.
And you'd be surprised at what IS a laughing matter. If you'll allow it.
